In these paintings, small panels of wood are primed with white acrylic paint, followed by several layers of earthy, dark, acrylic colours. The hard surface of the wood can then be scrubbed and rubbed to create a different type of surface from that on paper. Watercolour is then applied, images sought out and revealed, and narratives created.

This group of paintings has gradually evolved to create more monochromatic and dramatic works, where a strong graphic sensibility is evident. Using the grained surface of some of the wood, as well as the gestural quality of the underpinning acrylic ground, a strong sense of movement and dynamic has emerged in these paintings. The biblical and mythological themes recur, as figures, characters and creatures adopt their positions in emerging landscapes and underworlds.
